Subject:ah, poetry
Time:10:36 pm.
Reminder to Emi: Poetry exists because rhyming narratives were easier to memorize in oral traditions and the medium basically became obsolete once the first form of writing was invented by some primitive squatting in the mud and poking at dirt with a stylus.

hope that helps

Here is a short essay. The content is pretty obvious from the title, which is Orson Scott Card Has Always Been an Asshat.

It is a pretty concise summary of why I think Ender's Game sucked, and a pretty telling example of why Orson Scott Card should be banned from touching pen or keyboard.

You should read it if you have even a passing interest in science fiction.

Tonight, if you were not already aware, is a total lunar eclipse visible from most of the US. For those of us in EST zones, the interesting parts of the eclipse will begin at 10:01 PM and end at 10:51. Lunar eclipses are totally safe to view without any form of optical protection and look pretty spiffy, especially if you have a pair of binoculars or a telescope on hand.

For those of you in Georgia who want to vote in the primaries (and if you are not, what the fuck is wrong with you), you can do so by absentee ballot if you think you might forget or hate polling places or will be otherwise occupied or whatever the hell come February 5th. Handily, you can now vote by absentee ballot for any reason whatsoever and the state will be all like "it's cool, brah" and you'll be all like "sweet, i'm totally participating in the electoral process and performing my civic duty, mang."

To get a ballot, go to http://sos.georgia.gov/elections/elections/voter_information/absentee.htm and download the PDF, then mail it to your registered county board of registrars, which you can also look up through the link provided at the aforementioned site. Fill out of the form with the directions listed, which is pretty easy, and in a little bit you'll receive your absentee package in the mail. Fill that out, making sure not to vote for Buchanan, and mail it back with the provided envelope in enough time to reach your electoral board by 7 PM on February 5th; ideally, it'll get there earlier, but I acknowledge that you and I are lazy persons.

Those of you who are not registered in Georgia that still see this can usually check on your processes by visiting your state's secretary of state website, which you should do post haste, unless your state has already had its primary, in which you should have taken care of this already.

Finally, again I encourage all of you to vote, regardless of your political persuasion. Even a vote for Ron Paul is better than not participating in your one major chance to affect your government. Remember the motto of democracy: Suffragium aut tacere.

Well, I just killed my new computer by trying to use Boot Camp.

If anyone has 32-bit copy of Windows that's by default upgraded to SP2, I would really, really love to borrow it from you for a few days, just so I can remove this blight from my hard drive.

Subject:If I had a rocket launcher...
Time:1:47 am.
So, the result of a long, boring night left to my own devices makes me think this is a good idea.

A New Meme: Draw Fran!

The goal is pretty simple. If you can draw, even just a little bit, you should draw Fran, from Final Fantasy XII, and then post it on your interweb journal. Then tell others to draw Fran.

Why draw Fran? Well, for the ladies, she's a tough (big) little ass-kicker, and that's a pretty positive role model compared to the vast majority of women in video games. For the guys, she's pretty hot. For the dorks, man, have you seen her attack power? It's huuuuge!

So whip out a quick doodle or a hugely elaborate pen and ink rendering - draw Fran!

Subject:Mac Oddity
Time:12:04 am.
I've got a techie question for all you Mac-users out there.

I finally dumped my pictures of my sculpture project from waaaaay back in the day onto my machine. I've cropped and patched some of these images.

Now, the weird bit. In Preview, Photoshop, Firefox, whatever app I use to view the things, they're still cropped and normal. In the Finder Preview window, the unaltered file information still shows up - IE uncropped, unretouched, etc, but only in the little preview box within Finder itself.

To the best of my knowledge, my Windows box (now that it's running again - thanks, Glen!) doesn't have any sort of file preview like this, so I can't really tell if it's just a Mac thing or if it's a file thing.

Never the less, there's clearly data here that's taking up valuable space on my HDD. Is this some sort of preview image created for this express purpose and thus so small as to be inconsequential, or is the main file still carrying all the useless bytes; if so, how can I get to them to get rid of 'em? They're high-res JPEGs, if that makes any difference.

Aside: reaaaaally don't want to go back to class. Oh well, gotta get it over with.
